About counting words in a PDF

Word counts, character counts and estimated reading time are common things to need from a PDF — for a submission with a word limit, a translation quote, or just knowing how long a document will take to read — but a PDF doesn't expose that the way a word processor does. This tool extracts the actual text from every page and counts it directly.

It reads the document with pdf.js, pulling the real text layer out of each page (not an image render), and tallies words, characters, sentences and an estimated reading time from the result. Because it reads the text layer, a scanned document with no underlying text returns a count close to zero — run OCR PDF first if the file started life as a scan or photo.

Supported files

Accepts a PDF with selectable text. Produces on-screen word, character and sentence counts, plus an estimated reading time.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF's text is extracted and counted entirely in your browser with pdf.js — nothing is uploaded.

Common problems

The count is zero or much lower than expected
The PDF is likely a scan or an image with no real text layer. Run OCR PDF first to add selectable text, then count again.

PDF Word Counter — frequently asked questions

Does this work on scanned PDFs?+

Only if the PDF has a real text layer. A purely scanned image has no text to count — run OCR PDF first.

How is reading time estimated?+

At roughly 200 words per minute.

Is there a free way to count words and reading time in a PDF?+

Yes — this tool counts words and reading time entirely in your browser, free and with nothing uploaded.

Does it count words per page or the whole document?+

The whole document's total — a page-by-page breakdown isn't shown in this version.

Do you upload my files to a server?+

No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.

Is there a file size limit?+

There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
