About compressing a PDF to 1 MB

1 MB is a generous target that keeps quality high while getting most large documents down to an emailable, uploadable size. The tool re-encodes the images in your PDF in a loop, reducing quality only as much as it needs to, until the file is under 1 MB.

This is the right choice when the file is large mainly because of one or two high-resolution scans or screenshots and you want to keep everything readable. A long book-length scan might still land above 1 MB — the tool reports the size it reached.

The compression runs entirely in your browser. Tighter limits (100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB) have their own tools, and Compress PDF lets you choose the quality level directly.

Supported files

Accepts a single PDF. Produces a PDF at or under 1 MB.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Nothing leaves your browser.

Common problems

Still over 1 MB
A very long or scan-heavy PDF may not fit. Split it, or remove pages you don't need before compressing.

Compress PDF to 1MB — frequently asked questions

Is 1 MB a safe default?+

For most multi-page documents, yes — it's usually enough room that the quality loss is barely noticeable, unlike the more aggressive 100 KB or 200 KB targets.

What if my file is already under 1 MB?+

It's returned as-is (or lightly re-compressed) — there's nothing to shrink.

Is there a free way to compress a PDF to under 1 MB?+

Yes — this tool compresses down to 1 MB entirely in your browser, free and with nothing uploaded.

Is my file uploaded to compress it?+

No — compressing down to 1 MB runs entirely in your browser with pdf-lib.

Do you upload my files to a server?+

No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.

Is there a file size limit?+

There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
