About reading a PDF aloud

Having a document read aloud is useful for proofreading by ear, for accessibility, or just for listening while doing something else — and it doesn't need a server-side text-to-speech service if the browser already has one built in. This tool extracts a PDF's text and reads it using your browser's own speech synthesis voices.

It pulls the text layer out of each page with pdf.js and feeds it to the Web Speech API's `speechSynthesis`, which every modern browser ships with its own set of voices — you can pick which one to use, adjust the reading speed, and jump page by page. Because it relies on the text layer, a scanned PDF with no real text underneath won't have anything to read; run OCR PDF first.

Supported files

Accepts a PDF with selectable text. Reads it aloud using your browser's built-in voices — no file is produced.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Text extraction and speech happen entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded, and no audio is sent to a server.

Common problems

Nothing is read, or it's silent
The PDF likely has no real text layer — a scan or a photo of a document has nothing for the browser to read aloud. Run OCR PDF first.

Read PDF Aloud — frequently asked questions

Does this upload my document anywhere?+

No — the PDF is read entirely in your browser, and playback uses your browser's own built-in voice engine. Nothing is sent to a server.

Why do the available voices look different on my phone vs. computer?+

Voices come from your operating system and browser, not from this site — which ones are installed varies by device.

Does this work on scanned PDFs?+

Only if the PDF has a selectable text layer to read from. Run OCR PDF first on a purely scanned document.

Is there a free PDF voice reader that works online?+

Yes — this tool reads a PDF aloud using your browser's built-in text-to-speech voice, free and with nothing uploaded.

Do you upload my files to a server?+

No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.

Is there a file size limit?+

There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
