About PDF dark mode
Reading a stark white PDF in a dim room is uncomfortable in the same way a bright white webpage is — which is why browsers and apps offer dark mode, but PDF readers mostly don't. This tool converts a document to a dark background with light text, tuned for comfortable reading rather than a literal color inversion.
Each page is re-rendered as an image with pdf.js and remapped to a dark background with light foreground content with pdf-lib rebuilding the result — entirely in your browser. Unlike a straight color inversion, this aims to keep the page looking like a normal document, just recolored for low light, rather than swapping every hue to its photographic negative.

Is my file uploaded?

PDF Dark Mode — frequently asked questions
Why not just invert colours?+
A plain invert turns blue links orange. Dark mode flips only lightness, so headings, links and charts stay the colour you expect.
Is text still selectable?+
No — pages become flat images.
Is there a free way to turn a PDF dark for night reading?+
Yes — this tool recolors the document for dark-mode reading entirely in your browser, free and with nothing uploaded.
Can I adjust how dark the background gets?+
The conversion uses a fixed dark palette tuned for comfortable reading — for a different look, try Invert PDF Colors or Change PDF Background Color instead.
Do you upload my files to a server?+
No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.
Is there a file size limit?+
There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
