About compressing a résumé PDF

Job portals and applicant tracking systems commonly cap upload size at 1–2 MB, and a résumé exported from a design tool with a photo or a fancy header can quietly exceed that — leading to a silent rejection at the upload step rather than a clear error. This tool is Compress PDF's target-size mode, framed for that specific situation: pick a size limit and it compresses down to fit.

It works the same way as Compress to Size: re-encoding embedded images at progressively lower quality in steps with pdf-lib until the file lands under your target, or stops at the smallest it can manage if the limit is unreachable — text and layout are never touched, only image data. For a résumé that's mostly text with one small photo, this usually gets well under typical portal limits with no visible quality loss.

Supported files

Accepts a PDF. Produces a PDF at or under your chosen size limit, in the same page layout.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser with pdf-lib — your résumé is never uploaded to a server.

Compress Resume PDF — frequently asked questions

What size should my resume PDF be?+

Most applicant tracking systems accept up to 5 MB, but many job portals cap it at 1–2 MB, and some at 500 KB. Check the specific portal's limit if it's listed.

Will compressing hurt how my resume looks to an ATS?+

No — an ATS reads the text layer, which stays intact. Compression only re-renders and shrinks any images (like a headshot or logo).

Should I compress a text-only resume?+

Usually you won't need to — a plain-text resume is already tiny. This tool matters most when your resume PDF has a photo, a designed template with background graphics, or is a scanned copy.

Is there a free way to shrink a résumé PDF for job portals?+

Yes — this tool compresses the résumé entirely in your browser, free and with nothing uploaded.

Do you upload my files to a server?+

No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.

Is there a file size limit?+

There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
