About removing EXIF metadata from a photo

Every photo from a phone or camera carries EXIF metadata alongside the pixels — the camera model, exposure settings, the exact date and time, and often precise GPS coordinates of where it was taken. That's useful for organizing your own photo library, but it's also exactly the kind of detail you don't want attached to a photo you're posting publicly or sending to someone you don't know well.

This tool decodes the image onto a canvas and re-encodes it from scratch. A canvas only ever holds pixel data — it has no concept of EXIF fields — so the moment the image is redrawn and exported, every metadata tag is gone by construction, not by a filter that might miss one. The visible image is pixel-for-pixel unchanged; only the invisible metadata is stripped, and it happens entirely on your device.

Supported files

Accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and other common photo formats. Produces a clean copy of the same image with all EXIF data removed.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The photo is decoded and re-encoded entirely in your browser — it's never uploaded, which matters more than usual here, since the whole point is not sending the file's hidden data anywhere.

Remove EXIF / Metadata — frequently asked questions

What metadata gets removed?+

All of it — camera make/model, lens, GPS coordinates, capture date, editing software, orientation tags. Canvas re-encoding carries none of it forward.

Does it change how the photo looks?+

No visible change; it's re-saved at high quality.

Is there a free way to strip GPS and EXIF data from a photo?+

Yes — this tool strips the metadata entirely in your browser, free and with nothing uploaded.

Does it work on HEIC photos too?+

Yes — HEIC is decoded like any other format and the EXIF-free copy is re-encoded, though the output is a standard format like JPG rather than HEIC.

Do you upload my files to a server?+

No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.

Is there a file size limit?+

There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
