About converting GIF to PNG

A static (non-animated) GIF is limited to 256 colors, a real constraint on photos and gradients — converting to PNG lifts that ceiling to full 24-bit color while staying just as lossless.

The first (or only) frame is decoded and re-encoded as PNG on a canvas, entirely in your browser. Worth knowing: PNG doesn't support animation, so converting an animated GIF this way keeps only a single frame — for the whole animation, keep it as GIF or convert to a video format instead.

Supported files

Accepts GIF images. Produces a .png image (single frame — animation isn't carried over).

Is my file uploaded?

No. The GIF's frame is decoded and re-encoded as PNG entirely in your browser on a canvas — it's never uploaded.

Common problems

The animation is gone in the result
PNG is a still-image format and can't hold multiple frames — only the first frame of an animated GIF carries over. Keep the original GIF if you need the animation.

GIF to PNG — frequently asked questions

Is the file uploaded?+

No — the GIF is decoded and re-encoded as PNG entirely in your browser.

Any quality loss?+

No — PNG is lossless, so the frame comes through pixel-exact.

Is there a free GIF to PNG converter online?+

Yes — this tool decodes the GIF's frame and re-encodes it as PNG entirely in your browser, free and with nothing uploaded.

Does this keep the animation?+

No — only the first frame is used. PNG can't hold multiple frames, so keep the original GIF if you need the animation.

Do you upload my files to a server?+

No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.

Is there a file size limit?+

There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
