About adding a header and footer to a PDF

A running header or footer — a document title, a date, a page number, a filename — repeated on every page is a small detail that makes a document look finished and helps anyone who prints it keep loose pages in order. This tool stamps custom header and footer text across every page, with tokens for today's date, the page number and total, and the filename so you don't have to type them by hand.

Text is drawn directly onto each page with pdf-lib at the margin you set, entirely in your browser — no re-rendering, so the rest of the page stays exactly as it was, including any existing selectable text. Tokens like the page number are substituted per page as the document is built, so "Page {page} of {total}" comes out correctly numbered throughout.

Supported files

Accepts a PDF. Produces the same PDF with header and/or footer text added to every page.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Text is stamped entirely in your browser with pdf-lib — nothing is uploaded.

Add Header & Footer — frequently asked questions

What tokens can I use?+

Type {n} for the current page number, {p} for the total page count, {date} for today's date, and {filename} for the file's name. Anything else is printed as-is.

Can I have different text on the left, center, and right?+

Yes — the header and footer each have three independent slots (left, center, right). Fill in only the ones you need.

Can I keep the header and footer off the cover page?+

Yes — tick 'Skip the first page' and page one is left untouched, while {n} still counts it unless you change the start number.

Is this different from the Page Numbers tool?+

Page Numbers just drops a number in one spot. This tool adds arbitrary header and footer text in up to six positions, with tokens for numbers, dates, and the file name.

Can I add a custom header and footer to a PDF for free?+

Yes — fill in the slots you need with your own text or tokens, free and entirely in your browser.

Do you upload my files to a server?+

No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.

Is there a file size limit?+

There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
