About removing an image background
Cutting a subject out from its background — for a product photo, a profile picture, or a graphic that needs to sit on something else — normally means either careful manual selection in a photo editor or sending the image to a cloud AI service. This tool does the AI part locally: it segments the foreground subject from the background and erases everything else, leaving a transparent PNG.
The segmentation runs with `@imgly/background-removal`, an ONNX machine-learning model executed in your browser via WebAssembly — the same general kind of neural network a cloud background-removal API uses, just running on your device instead of a server. The one caveat worth knowing: the segmentation model itself is a several-megabyte file fetched from IMG.LY's CDN the first time you use the tool (then cached for next time) — that one-time generic model download is the only network request involved. The image you're actually processing never leaves your browser.
Supported files
Accepts JPG, PNG, WebP and other common images. Produces a .png with the background erased to transparent.
Is my file uploaded?
Yes, in the sense that matters — your image is never uploaded or sent anywhere. The only network activity is a one-time download of the generic AI model itself (not your photo) the first time you use the tool.

Image Background Remover — frequently asked questions
Does this upload my photo anywhere?+
No — background removal runs entirely in your browser using an on-device AI model. The only network activity is a one-time download of that model (a few MB) the first time you use it, the same way the OCR tool's engine works; your photo itself never leaves your device.
What file formats does this support?+
JPG, PNG, and WebP in; the result downloads as a PNG with a transparent background.
Why does the first run take longer than expected?+
The AI model downloads once on first use and is cached by your browser after that — later uses on the same device are noticeably faster.
Is there a free way to remove an image background online?+
Yes — this tool erases the background automatically, free, private, and with no account needed.
Do you upload my files to a server?+
No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.
Is there a file size limit?+
There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
