About inspecting a PDF

Before working with an unfamiliar PDF, it's often useful to see its vitals at a glance — the PDF version, page count and sizes, whether it's password-protected, what fonts it declares, and roughly how many embedded images it contains — without opening it in a full editor. This tool reads that information straight out of the file's internal structure.

It parses the PDF with pdf-lib entirely in your browser: page dimensions and count come directly from the page tree, encryption status from the document's security dictionary, and font and image counts are inferred from the draw operations on each page rather than a full resource walk, so those two figures are approximate — useful as a rough sense of a document's complexity, not an exact audit.

Supported files

Accepts a PDF. Produces an on-screen summary — version, pages, sizes, encryption, fonts and image counts.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is parsed entirely in your browser with pdf-lib — nothing is uploaded.

PDF Inspector — frequently asked questions

Are the font and image counts exact?+

They're approximate — inferred from each page's draw operations rather than a full resource-tree walk.

Does it show if a PDF is password-protected?+

Yes — the Encrypted row reports whether the document has encryption or restricted permissions.

Is there a free way to view a PDF's metadata and document info?+

Yes — this tool inspects a PDF's metadata and structure entirely in your browser, free and with nothing uploaded.

Does it show embedded fonts by name?+

It reports how many distinct fonts are used, inferred from the page draw operations, rather than listing each font's exact name — a quick complexity check, not a full font audit.

Do you upload my files to a server?+

No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.

Is there a file size limit?+

There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
