About inverting PDF colors

Inverting flips every color on a page to its opposite — white becomes black, each color swaps to its complement — the same effect as photo negative film. It's mostly used as a step toward a fully dark-themed document, or for a specific visual effect a normal edit can't easily produce.

Every page is re-rendered as an image with pdf.js, each pixel's color is inverted, and the PDF is rebuilt from the inverted pages with pdf-lib — entirely in your browser. If your goal is specifically a comfortable dark-mode reading document rather than a literal color inversion, PDF Dark Mode is tuned for that instead — it keeps colored content recognizable rather than inverting it outright.

Supported files

Accepts a PDF. Produces the same PDF with every page's colors inverted.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Inversion runs entirely in your browser with pdf.js and pdf-lib — nothing is uploaded.

Invert PDF Colors — frequently asked questions

Isn't this the same as dark mode?+

Not quite — inversion flips hue too, so blues become orange. PDF Dark Mode keeps colours recognisable.

Is there a free way to invert a PDF's colours?+

Yes — this tool inverts every page's colours entirely in your browser, free and with nothing uploaded.

Does it work on a document with photos?+

Yes, though photos generally look strange when inverted since every hue flips to its opposite — this effect suits text-heavy documents and simple graphics best.

Is my file uploaded to invert it?+

No — the inversion runs entirely in your browser.

Do you upload my files to a server?+

No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.

Is there a file size limit?+

There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
