About converting JPG to PNG

PNG is lossless and supports transparency — two things JPG can't do — which is why you'd convert a JPG to PNG before adding it to a design that needs a transparent background, or before further edits where you don't want compression artifacts to compound.

The image is decoded and re-encoded as PNG on a canvas, entirely in your browser. Worth knowing: converting a JPG to PNG can't add transparency that wasn't there or undo compression artifacts already baked into the JPG — it just stops further loss from this point on, and typically results in a larger file.

Supported files

Accepts JPG images. Produces a .png image.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser on a canvas — the image is never uploaded.

JPG to PNG — frequently asked questions

Will converting JPG to PNG improve quality?+

No. PNG is lossless, so it won't add back detail the JPG already discarded — but it won't lose any more, which helps if you plan to edit further.

Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?+

PNG stores every pixel exactly, with no lossy compression, so photos are typically 2–5× larger than the JPG.

Is there a free JPG to PNG converter online?+

Yes — this tool decodes and re-encodes the JPG entirely in your browser, free and with nothing uploaded.

Is my file uploaded to convert it?+

No — the JPG is decoded and re-encoded entirely in your browser.

Do you upload my files to a server?+

No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.

Is there a file size limit?+

There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
