About editing an animated GIF in the browser
This decodes every frame of an animated GIF using the browser's ImageDecoder API, lays them out in a grid so you can click any frame to drop it, lets you speed up or slow down playback (0.5×–2×), and optionally caps the width to shrink the file — then re-encodes the survivors into a new GIF with the gifenc library.
It's a trim-and-resize tool rather than a full frame-reordering editor: frames can be removed and timing/size adjusted, but reordering or inserting new frames isn't supported yet. Everything runs locally — nothing is uploaded.
Supported files
Accepts animated GIF. Produces a smaller or shorter animated GIF.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Every frame is decoded, edited and re-encoded entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
Common problems
- "Your browser can't do this"
- GIF frame decoding needs the ImageDecoder API — use a recent Chrome, Edge or Safari 17+. Firefox doesn't fully support it yet.
- This GIF only has one frame
- A single-frame GIF isn't animated, so there's nothing to edit — this tool needs a genuinely animated source.
How to use the GIF Editor
- 1
Add your GIF
Drop in the animated GIF — every frame is decoded in your browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari 17+).
- 2
Drop frames and set speed
Click any frame in the grid to remove it from the result, and pick a playback speed from 0.5× to 2×. Optionally cap the width to shrink it.
- 3
Save and download
Click Save changes; the kept frames are re-encoded into a new GIF.
GIF Editor — frequently asked questions
Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?+
No. Every frame is decoded, edited and re-encoded entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
Which browsers work?+
Chrome, Edge and Safari 17+ — decoding a GIF's frames uses the ImageDecoder API, which Firefox doesn't fully support yet. The tool tells you if yours can't.
What can I edit?+
Drop individual frames, speed the animation up or slow it down (0.5× to 2×), and optionally shrink it to a maximum width.
Can I reorder frames or add new ones?+
Not yet — this trims existing frames and adjusts timing/size. Reordering and adding frames aren't supported.
Do you upload my files to a server?+
No — every tool here processes your files entirely on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The only exception is the AI tools, which send the extracted text (not the file) to Claude to do their work.
Is there a file size limit?+
There's no artificial limit we impose, but since processing happens in your browser, very large files (500+ MB or 1,000+ pages) are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
