Form 8822
Change of Address
Tell the IRS your new address so refunds, notices and correspondence reach you, without waiting for your next tax return to update it.

What is Form 8822?
Form 8822 notifies the IRS of a new mailing address for you (and your spouse, on a joint return) separately from filing a tax return. Filing a return with a new address also updates IRS records, but this form gets it updated right away instead of waiting for the next filing season.
It covers individual income tax, as well as gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer tax returns. A business changing its address uses the separate Form 8822-B instead.
It's a short, one-page form: your name and SSN, your prior address, and your new address.
- Who needs it
- Anyone who has moved since their last tax return and wants IRS notices and any refund by mail to reach the right address, rather than risk them going to a stale one.
- Deadline
- No deadline, and no penalty for filing late — but IRS notices mailed to your last address on file are still considered validly sent even if you've moved.
- How to submit
- Mail the signed, completed form to the IRS address listed in the instructions for your state — it cannot be filed online or by fax.

Form 8822 — frequently asked questions
Does filing a return with a new address count as notifying the IRS?+
Yes, that alone updates IRS records — Form 8822 just gets it updated sooner, before your next filing.
Can I submit this online instead of mailing it?+
No. Form 8822 must be mailed; there's no electronic filing option for it.
Does this also forward my mail through USPS?+
No — it's separate from a US Postal Service mail-forwarding request, which you'd file directly with USPS.
I run a business — do I use this form too?+
No, use Form 8822-B for a business address or responsible-party change instead.
