US Passport Renewal Application by Mail
The mail-in application to renew a US passport you already hold, without appearing in person.
What is Form DS-82?
Form DS-82 lets eligible adults renew by mail. You qualify if your most recent passport is undamaged and in your possession, was issued when you were 16 or older, was issued within the last 15 years, and was issued in your current name (or you can document a name change).
You mail the completed and signed form together with your most recent passport (it is returned to you separately), one new passport photo, the fee by check or money order, and name-change evidence if applicable.
If you do not meet every condition, you must use Form DS-11 in person instead.

- Adults renewing a recent US passport that meets all the DS-82 eligibility conditions. Children under 16 always renew with DS-11 in person.
- Deadline
- No deadline, but renew early — many countries require at least six months of validity beyond your travel dates. Check current processing times before you rely on a date.
- How to submit
- By mail only. Complete it with the State Department Form Filler or by hand, sign and date it, and mail the packet to the address on the form for your state and service level (routine or expedited).

Do I have to send my old passport?+
Yes. It is mailed in with the application and returned to you, usually in a separate package from the new one.
